Choice of cultivar

The growers who supply Veiling Hoogstraten are usually small-scale specialized companies. Their in-dept know-how and the strict regulations that they scrupulously comply with, allow Veiling Hoogstraten to consistently bring tasty and healthy strawberries to the market. The guidelines for cultivation are laid down in the Hoogstraten® specifications, which you can obtain following a Request for information.

The widespread use of non-soil bound cultivations means soil decontamination is no longer necessary, which benefits the environment. The fact that cultivation is less dependent on climate limits the pressure of disease and cultivation on racks as represented a step forward in ergonomic terms.

The most important criteria that cultivars need to comply with are productivity, certain harvest, fruit size, flavour and shelf life. Another increasingly important criterion is the cultivar's susceptibility to disease and pest. There is a clear distinction between June-bearing fruit and perpetual fruiting strawberries or the so-called day-neutral cultivars. June-bearing strawberries are short day plants. This means that the flowers are planted during the autumn as the days grow shorter. In the case of perpetual fruiting strawberries the fruit is limited to approx. 4 weeks, while the harvest period for perpetual fruiting strawberries continues over a period of 4 to 5 weeks. More than 80 % of the cultivated area for June-bearing fruit consists of Elsanta. The remaining 20% is made up of Darselect, Sonata and Clery among others.
