Tom Van Delm is currently responsible for the strawberry research at the Research Center Hoogstraten. After graduating at the Faculty of Bioscience Engineering of the Catholic University in Leuven, he was scientific researcher at the Flemish Institute for Agricultural and Fisheries Research (ILVO).
Since 2008, he is the coordinator of the strawberry research at the Research Center Hoogstraten (Meerle) which has a long tradition in strawberry research. The scientific and practical strawberry research is focused on substrate culture, but also soil culture is a part of the programme. The accent of the strawberry research is on different themes: variety trials, cultivation techniques, fertilisation, energy, water use, new technologies, diseases and pests (IPM), flower bud analysis, propagation of tray plants,... Due to intensive contact with strawberry growers and the strawberry advisory team of the Research Center, the trials have a high practical value. This way research leads to a sustainable optimization of the strawberry cultivation. |
