This is the centre of the old section of Antwerp, and was the hub of activity for more than a thousand years. The Town Hall is the focus of the square, a fountain with the statue of Silvius Brabo dominates the opposite end. The Grote Markt is beautifully surrounded by the Town Hall and the so-called houses of the Guilds or corporations. Nowadays the Grote Markt is one of the most pleasant squares in the city. During beautiful warm summer days most people choose this spot to enjoy a refreshing beer from one of the many terraces.
